V&A Arts and Crafts: Design a Tile (3form / V&A)

This game gives users a chance to create their own tile in an Arts and Crafts style.
Just drag your shapes on, size them, colour them or rotate them and the tiles will tessellate automatically. Once you’re done, you can print your tile or submit it to the gallery.
This tool became one of the V&A’s most successful UGC projects and has generated more than 20,000 entries.
This is a great example of using a game as a fun and compelling way to learn. By inviting users to create their own, they get a real sense of what the Arts and Crafts style is all about.
What also makes this toy unique is the tessellation – even a simple tile looks like something to be proud of. This makes it fun for anyone from a small child just playing around, to an artist who wants to create something complex and beautiful. Some of the resulting designs have been stunning.
